Winter is coming. Along with it follows Game of Thrones jokes about how winter is coming, and putting on your winter tires.

We all know how important good winter tires are to maintaining traction over frigid, slippery surfaces. But what about your summer tires?

Even in summer, the amount of tread on your tire has a large impact, at least when it rains.

The interesting thing is: if it's dry out, your tread doesn't matter. In fact, you can get better traction without any tread at all-- if the road is bone-dry.

That's a big if. As soon as moisture hits the ground, it creates a barrier between the rubber of your tires and the road. Without tread to channel that water out of the way, your tires skim on top of the water, and you can lose control.

Your tires don't have to be bald as a monk's head to lose gripping power on a wet road, either. Even with 4/32 inch of tread left, which is before many experts recommend you change your tires, you will already have added several car lengths to your stopping distance.
