While both Tesla and Toyota have their hands in creating electrified, eco-friendly vehicles, Tesla Motors is all flash and sporty handling, while Toyota is profoundly practical. So what do these two distinctly different automakers have in common?
Both were named on the 50 Smartest Companies of 2016 list by the MIT Technology Review.
The Tech Review noted Toyota for its work creating the World Green Car of 2016, the Toyota Mirai. The Mirai is powered using hydrogen fuel cells, and emits nothing but water from its tailpipe.
Toyota's biggest achievement, according to the Review, was not in an environmental field, but in artificial intelligence. The Toyota Research Institute opened its doors in January of this year, and has been working toward the goal of machine learning, as well as developing mobility-assistance robots for in-home use (mainly senior care).
"We're very grateful to be recognized by MIT, one of the finest educational institutions in the world," said Jim Lentz, chief executive officer of Toyota North America. "Toyota's scientists are committed to innovation and leading the way to a future of mobility that is cleaner, safer, and provides freedom of mobility for all. In the spirit of kaizen, Toyota is committed to improving every day in the service of our customers and society."
